The walk in Cardiff had very set aims, to counter the prejudice, discrimination and stigmatisation of people with addiction and mental health problems. It was very inclusive and welcoming of everyone who attended again, from all over the UK. To hear John and Carol Shinholser who came over from the states to speak and to represent both Faces and voices of recovery and The McShin Foundation a leading non-profit, full-service Recovery Community Organization really was an inspiration for many of us. Also that day representatives from the harm reduction community Neil hunt and Danny Morris walked with us with an open mind and heart.
The 1.5 mile walk began at 11.00am and weaved its way through Cardiff City centre, with a Welsh drumming band leading the ways. Again we were met with warmth and questions from the Welsh people who were happily going about their Saturday afternoon shopping as we danced and paraded our way thorough their city.
The walk ended in front of City Hall where refreshments speeches and entertainment was enjoyed by all. Wynford Ellis Owen and Sarah Louise Vaile were instrumental in bring the walk to Cardiff and we all had a fantastic day thanks to their and many others hard work.
But hey these are just my memories why don’t you send yours, and we can publish them on the site also.
